Well, my long anticipated surgery is done and over with. Surgery was last Monday and I was home from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon. Not too bad? I think they probably wanted to keep me one more day, but I insisted. Seriously, I don’t know how in the world they expect anyone to recover in the hospital. I was in intensive care for two nights and it had to be the noisiest place I have ever experienced! I felt really bad for the people that were really sick. At one point my first night, it sounded like they were celebrating a party at the nurses station. It was about 1 AM and there was a lot of hooping and hollering and laughing. Sheesh! That was a lot of commotion for an ICU.
All in all, I feel pretty good. I have some swelling, which is normal. I am taking plenty of medication to combat pain and swelling and muscle spasms. My biggest complaint is the collar. I cannot even think about 6 weeks with this bad boy on! It has not even been 1 full week! I am trying to really keep things in perspective. After all, people have gone through so much worse than wearing a cervical collar. I just think of my own family. My brother having a heart attack at the age of 34 and then eventually double bypass and then also my Dad. Quadruple bypass less than a year ago! Yeah, pretty sure a cervical collar is a walk in the rose garden on a beautiful spring day compared to what they have gone through. And besides, I am a Rhey. Really tough!!
My boy #1 is up north with my brother, nephew Tyler and some friends of the family for the annual “manly bonding” of deer hunting. Very much a tradition in our family, but not really my and MR. T.’s thing. I know it is in his blood, he has talked about it for so long now. He was so excited to go, that he actually could not sleep and thought he might throw up from excitement. I, of course, have been a little nervous about this whole thing. Not because I think something bad will happen. My brother and my Dad are very responsible and safe outdoors men. I just worry about the typical Mommy things. Is he warm enough? Did he eat a good breakfast? Is he missing me? (What a joke…I know he is not. He is having a ball!) The exciting news came just a few hours ago. Nephew Tyler got a 5 pt. buck on opening morning! My boy hung in there through the whole….ahem….gross part. My brother said he did not even flinch or winse or gag. I think he is a true outdoors man! Boy #1 called me at about 10:30 AM to tell me the good news. He was so excited. Apparently, the first one in camp to get a deer, gets a bottle of booze to share with the camp to celebrate! Being that Ty is only 16, they settled for free soda’s all around and a couple of pizza’s in the bar! If you knew Ty and boy#1, you would know that they feel like they just hit the jackpot! Sounds like they are having some fun and I love the fact that my boy is bonding with my Dad, my brother and my nephew. That is such a good feeling. But back here at Casa Teenie, the effects of big brother being gone are wearing heavy on #2. He is already asking when his brother will be home. He really misses him. Sometimes they argue and tease each other, but they are truly good buddies when it comes down to it. I am very thankful for that!
Speaking of being Thankful…my good friend Mary brought over a scrumptious dinner for us to enjoy. I plan on putting it in the oven tonight and look forward to tasting it. It smells divine! That has to be one of the most thoughtful gifts to bring someone while they recover. I don’t need to cook, and Mr. T. is quite capable of preheating the oven and sliding the pan in. Yummmm, I am getting really hungry just thinking about it. I will let you know how it goes! Thanks again, Mary! You are so great~
My Mom also came and did so much for us here. Right before going into the hospital, she helped me paint the living room ceiling. Then she took care of my boys for me for the whole week. She cooked, packed lunches, made sure homework was done, got kids off to school and made sure everything ran smoothly. What would we do without family? I am so blessed and so lucky to have such wonderful people in my life. My sister in law took the kids for a night and got them off to school the first day (and picked up) so my Mom could be at the hospital with me and Mr. T. Then when I got home, she brought over a tray of yummy desserts to enjoy! The boys appreciated that for sure!
So, all in all, things are good here! I think I need a nap about now, but that is not so bad! A little snooze, a little Vicodin and I will be good to go for a few more hours! Thanks, everyone for your calls and cards. It is really nice to know that people are thinking of you when you are down. Love to you all!

I’m so glad to read that you are doing so well post-op! It’s wonderful having so much family support. Just don’t overdo it, and you’ll be fine! I hope this surgery does the trick for you

Hey KC – I’ve been waiting for an update. I didn’t want to call the house in case you were sleeping or not feeling well. I hope you are now on the road to recovery and will start to feel better soon. I’ll call soon. Just wanted you to know I was thinking of you.

I’ve been waiting for an update too! I just asked Doug’s Dad a few days ago if you had your surgery yet (I’m terrible with time frames, can you tell?) and he said “that was a week ago!” Ooops! Sheesh.
Well, either way, I’m SO glad to hear that all went well and you are on your road to recovery. Yay!!
I was not surprised to read that your mom was there holding down the fort…she is wonderful. And a shout out to the boys for showing the bigger guys how it’s done!
