I often hear other parents talk about what it is like to raise a teenager, or a pre-teen, a “tween”. Often times parents joke about  how they get a one word answer to a question, a sullen look, a moody attitude.  I guess I am starting to approach those years. Normally, boy #1 is OK with sharing information about school, what is going on in each class, who he sat by at lunch.  I am always eager to hear about his day, especially this year, since he started finding his way through a jungle of wild, hungry animals  the dreaded MIDDLE SCHOOL!

So far, things have been what seems to be….well, I guess I don’t know. We ask, he says “fine.”  I am getting the one word answers. “Yeah”, ”uh-huh”, “no”.  I wish he would offer up more information.  I try to ask open ended questions, so that he has to respond with something other than, “yeah.”  Yesterday, I asked him how his day was (“fine.”)  Do you have homework tonight? (“yeah”) Anything exciting happen at school today? (“no…except for the fire.”) What?!

Apparently, there was a fire at my son’s school!  The kids and teachers started to smell smoke, and within minutes, the fire alarms went off.  Now this is literally two school days after the first fire “drill” of the year (thank goodness for practice!) and I think a lot of the kids thought it was another “drill.”  It was not.  Someone set fire to a garbage can in the 2nd floor girls bathroom. Damage was contained to only the bathroom, and according to the Principal’s note that was sent home regarding said fire, there were no actual “flames.”  (I think he is downplaying it for the benefit of the parents) The fire is under investigation with the fire department.  What is going on? Someone obviously had access to matches, a lighter or a cigarette.  I am happy to say that everyone was safe and got out of the building in a timely and responsible manner.  I know this for sure. I am going to need some Xanex for the remainder of the school year!
